Thomas Warren Muecke

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas Muecke Sr.

Tom was born in Galveston, Texas. Growing up on the island, he developed the passions that would remain with him through most of his life: fishing, game hunting, sports, and a general love for the outdoors and the comfort of the south Texas coast.

Tom graduated from Ball High School in 1958. After spending a summer on a dredger traveling up and down the Texas Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Tom went to Sam Houston State University where he would earn a Bachelor of Science in the field of physics. It was here that he met his wife of fifty years, Suzanne.

After college, they returned together to Galveston where Tom took his first job teaching and coaching for Galveston ISD. During this time, he and Suzanne had their children, Tom Jr. and Karen. In 1968, they moved to Angleton where Tom began his career at Dow Chemical as a computer engineer and Suzanne started teaching at Angleton High School.

Throughout his life in Angleton, Tom established himself as a beloved figure in his community. He made many lifelong friends through his work and his involvement with summer Little League baseball. He was cherished for his commitment to the Angleton High School sports program where his children attended and participated. Tom was also blessed with an additional community of friends through the Baylor Football program.

While sports defined much of his life and interests, he never spent too much time away from the shores of the Gulf or the lakes of East Texas. He had a knack for frying fish and could be found at most family and friend gatherings positioned behind a vat of oil, cooking and sampling the goods before they made it to the buffet.

After retiring in 1995, he was able to, in large part, devote the remainder of his life to his full passion for the great outdoors through seasonal hunting and fishing. He developed a skill for taxidermy, and a few of his mounts can be seen in local establishments to this day.

Yet nothing could light up his world like his grandchildren. The days of his retirement were spent taking them fishing, helping them grow, and proudly cheering them on in their various extracurricular activities and events. And although it would split his allegiance between the Wildcats and the Friendswood Mustangs, when high school sports once again took center stage, they were some of the happiest years of his life.

Tom’s legacy is in the hearts of his family and in the regard in which he is held within his community. He will be remembered for his kindness, his nurturing disposition, sense of humor, and his thirst for life and the simple pleasures within it.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Peggy Muecke, his brother Sam Muecke, his wife Suzanne, and his son, Tom Muecke Jr. He leaves behind his daughter, Karen Hillier, son-in-law, Glen Hillier, daughter-in-law Alison Muecke, four grandchildren, Tyler Hillier (wife Rhiannon), Aaron Hillier (wife Mari), McKenzie Muecke, and Garret Muecke, and his great grandson, Caspian Hillier.
