Robert Alton Owens, Sr.'s Obituary

Robert Alton Owens, Sr., 78, of Angleton, Texas, passed away on April 4, 2026 with his family by his side.

Robert was born on April 5, 1947, in Quincy, California, to Harry and Rose Marie Owens. In 1955, his parents moved their family—Robert and his two younger sisters—to Angleton, where Harry had grown up. Robert graduated from Angleton High School in 1965.

A natural musician, Robert played both the drums and bass guitar. Throughout his life he was part of several local bands, including The Cicadelics, Kountry Kast, and Traylor Trash. Music, friends, and a good time was always part of his story.

Robert began his working life at his father’s RCA TV Shop, repairing televisions and making service calls around town. After those early years, he worked in several local trades and industries before joining the Angleton Police Department, where he worked his way up to the rank of Lieutenant. He later became the Fire Marshal and Code Enforcement Officer for the City of Angleton, a position he held until his retirement in 2011.

Alongside his full-time work, Robert volunteered with the Angleton Fire Department for many years, proudly serving his community in multiple ways. He was also an active member of the Red Devils cook-off team with the fire department, cooking alongside his father, brother-in-law, Alton Westberry and cousin Rick Perry.

He enjoyed spending time tinkering in his office, often spending hours building and repairing cuckoo clocks and other small projects that kept his hands busy and his mind sharp.

Weekends were often spent at The Icehouse surrounded by friends, family, and good music—frequently performing with Kountry Kast. Robert loved a spontaneous gathering and could always be counted on for a BBQ, especially with his sister Lynn leading the festivities. Known for his humor, storytelling, and easygoing spirit, Robert was well liked by many in the community, and nearly everyone had a “Robert story.”

During his years serving the City of Angleton, Robert married his longtime love, Pattie, with whom he shared many cherished years.

In 2019, Robert met and fell in love with Mary Austin, who later became his wife. Mary has been a blessing to Robert and to his family, providing devoted, daily care as his health declined. She remained a constant, loving presence by his side.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Rose Marie Owens; his sisters, Suzanne Kay and Lynn Elizabeth; his brother-in-law, Alton Westberry; and Pattie Owens, to whom he was married for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Karen Obenhaus and husband Mike, Robert (Bobby) Owens, Jr. and wife Carmen, and Stephanie Solis and husband Adam; his grandchildren Brandon, Shelby, Tyler, Colton, Addison, Christian, and Madelyn; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his best friend of over 60 years, Tim Jones.

He will be honored with full ceremonial services provided by The Angleton Fire Department, in recognition of his many years of service to the community.

Memorial Services will be on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Palms Funeral Home, visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. prior to the service.
