Robert "Bobby" Eugene
Mathews
December 12, 1947 – February 18, 2026
Robert “Bobby” Mathews, of Angleton, Texas, went to be in the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Bobby was born on December 12, 1947 in Houston, Texas, to Walter and Vera Mathews, their only child. He grew up with a strong spirit and a love for life that followed him throughout his years. As a student at Angleton High School, he played football and developed a lifelong appreciation for fast cars and he loved a good competition.
He was well known as “Big Bob”. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, carrying that sense of dedication and service into all aspects of his life. Bobby later married the love of his life, Beverly, building a family rooted in love, strength, and unwavering support. Together, they raised four children —creating a home filled with laughter, lessons, and lasting memories. As a devoted father, Bobby was deeply involved in his children’s lives. He coached them in baseball and softball, teaching not only the game but also the importance of teamwork, respect, and perseverance. Bobby was very proud of his heritage, as he was a descendant of the “Old Three Hundred”of Texas. He also was instrumental in developing the Danbury Rotary Club and was honored to participate in Backpack Buddies to help children in local schools.
Bobby worked for 35 years at Southwestern Bell where he later retired and was known for his strong work ethic and reliability. After his retirement, you could find him at Fillip’s Café on any given day in good conversation, with a cup of coffee in his hand. He and his wife Beverly owned Filipp’s for 12 years and their son and his wife are currently carrying on the family tradition.
In retirement, Bobby and Beverly spent time in Colorado and Palacios, Texas, but eventually returned to Brazoria County—the place that would always be home and where they had raised their family. He loved fishing, hunting, and sports but nothing brought him greater happiness than his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bobby was incredibly proud of his grandchildren and rarely missed a chance to support them. Whether in the stands or watching from afar, he never missed a game—always finding a way, even if it meant learning a new app, to cheer them on. His love, encouragement, and presence meant the world to them.
He will be remembered as a man of faith, devoted husband, a proud father, a loving grandfather, great-grandfather, a good friend and a man who found his greatest joy in his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
Bobby will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him, even his Facebook Family.
