Raymond Lee “Buddy” Rives, age 80, left us on February 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Buddy was born December 8, 1943, in Angleton, Texas and was a life-long Angleton resident. He graduated from AHS in 1962 where he participated in sports, wrote for the school newspaper and was named Class Wittiest (no surprise!). He attended Alvin Community College and was later drafted by the U.S. Army. He was deployed to serve in the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1966 as an Army Specialist 4th Class working in communications repairing radios. Upon discharge, Buddy returned to Angleton and later became reacquainted with classmate Joyce Ann Hill. They married on January 30, 1970, and raised their three girls in Angleton. Buddy spent his entire career working for AMSCOR and LISCO, retiring in 2011 as Vice President and General Manager.
Buddy was a devoted husband, loving father and adoring Paw-Paw. He came to all the twirling competitions, dance recitals, marching band performances, awards ceremonies and sporting events. Fishing was his passion until health issues prevented him from getting out on the bay. He was an amazing cook and if you were lucky enough to sample his stuffed crab, étouffée or gumbo, you know! He was incredibly generous and believed in paying it forward. Buddy may have been a man of few words, but he made those words count – and they were usually funny.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents Robert Lee Rives and Leona Helen (Cahill) Rives and his beautiful wife Joyce Ann Rives. He is survived by his daughters Renee Ruston and partner Roger Singletary of Angleton, Dianne Ruston and husband Scott Dunlap of Katy, and Susan (Rives) Horridge and husband David of Austin; grandsons Steven Ruston of Los Angeles and Spencer Horridge of Austin; sister Bobbie Elliott of Columbus; brothers-in-law Jamie Hill (Sandra) of Brazoria and Billie Joe Hill (Bea) of College Station and sister-in-law Marie Hill of Angleton; as well as dear cousins, nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.
A visitation will be held at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton on Monday, February 12 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held Tuesday, February 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Palms Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Angleton Cemetery immediately following.
