Obituary

Mary Lanell Maness

April 4, 1930 – August 20, 2026

Mary Lanell Maness, 96, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026, in Franklin, Texas. She was born on April 4, 1930, in Rodgers, Texas, to the late Thomas Earl “Jack” Shipp and Mary Opal (Whittington) Shipp.

On December 20, 1947, Mary married Cecil Maness in Madisonville, Texas. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, family, and devotion to one another.

Mary was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Angleton. Her faith was an important part of her life, and Sundays were especially meaningful to her. After church, she lovingly prepared a Sunday roast with all the fixings for her family, a tradition that created countless cherished memories around the dinner table.

A wonderful cook, Mary, had a special way of making every meal feel like home. Among her family’s favorites were her brownies and blueberry banana pie. Whether she was preparing a large Sunday dinner or baking something sweet, everything she made was filled with love.

Mary also enjoyed crocheting and reading, but the greatest joy of her life was spending time with her family. She treasured every moment shared with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her loving nature, warm heart, and devotion to her family will remain a beautiful part of the legacy she leaves behind.

She is survived by her children, David Floyd Maness and wife Anna, Stephen Michael Maness and wife Berna, Laurie Maness Turner and husband Jimmy; and her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Chase Maness and wife Emily, Cortney Turner and wife Mary, Lindsay Turner, Benson Turner, Beckett Turner, and Brooks Turner.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Earl “Jack” Shipp and Mary Opal Shipp; her siblings, Thomas Shipp and Lola Shipp Singletary; and her grandson, Sean Maness.

A funeral service honoring Mary’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Palms Funeral Home, with Pastor David Catoe officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and continue until the service begins.

Following the service, Mary will be laid to rest at the side of her beloved Cecil at Angleton Cemetery.

Mary will be remembered for her strong faith, her gentle and loving heart, the delicious meals she prepared, and the immeasurable love she gave to her family. Though she will be deeply missed, the memories she created and the traditions she passed down will continue to bring comfort to those who loved her.
