Katherine Elizabeth “Nannie” Stephens of Danbury, TX was called home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday February 25, 2026, in Angleton, TX in the presence of family members and loved ones.
Nannie was born on August 13, 1936, to Wesley and Elizabeth Vickery, the 5ᵗʰ of 11 children in Karnes County, TX in times of meager means, then war era to eventual young adulthood.
She met, fell in love and married her husband Doyle Stephens in 1954. They built a good life for themselves and their children in several locations eventually settling in a permanent home in Danbury in 1964, where they remained the rest of their lives over 60 years of friendships were formed expanding their lives and the lives of their children through to the passing of Doyle in September of 2010 and Katherine now.
Nannie completed her formal education in teaching including a master’s degree for her calling to be teacher of young children. This brought her great joy through her superb skills and absolute caring, nurturing, compassion and love for her students. She exemplified what education should strive for in such an important responsibility as development of young minds for a good and successful life for themselves. She retired in the early 2000’s with recognized achievement in a job well done.
Nannie was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson Bradley Stephens in 2005 and her husband Doyle in 2010. Also, siblings Alvin Vickery, Bernice Crouch, Bob Vickery, Betty Jean Shedd, and Laura Barbree.
She is survived by siblings Lonnie Vickery, Jeanette Taylor, James Vickery, Ginger Kaminsky, and Patricia Yaws. Children Lisa Auer, Stan Stephens, Mark Stephens (Terri) and Kerri Dafft and bonus child Lance Meredith (Andrea). Grandchildren Brandon Auer (Danielle), Clint Auer (Brook), Blaine Stephens (Brittany), Katie Love (Garrett), Dillon Stephens, Allison Upton (Austin), Lacie Dafft, Levy Flores, and Layden Flores. Great Grandchildren Brynlee, Saylee, and Whitlee Auer, Hayes, Payton, and Blake Auer, Braelyn and Allison Love, Korbin, Kynslee and Kase Stephens, Michaela Meredith and Maliyah David. Also survived by her most special friend Betty Rose Wollam.
Special thanks to Dr. Pacheco and his team at Pearland Memorial Hermann, The Staff at Country Village Care, IPH Home Health Care & Hospice, and daily caregiver while she was home Lauryn Burford for taking such great care of her.
Graveside services are planned for 12:00 noon, March 7, 2026, at Danbury Cemetery, followed by a “Celebration of a Life Well Lived” at the Danbury Community Center. Brother David Smith will preside and all that knew and loved Nannie are invited to attend.
