Jimmie Lou Green

Born in Alvin, November 12, 1926, she died peacefully in her sleep at Avanti Senior Living at Vision Park in Shenandoah with her family in the early morning hours of July 13, 2026. The daughter of Thomas Wesley Smith and Mary Pauline Prewitt Smith she grew up on the family dairy in Alvin. She was number seven of nine Smith children. As a child she was a tomboy, climbing trees, rambling the property, riding horses and swimming in the rice canals. A 1943 graduate of Alvin High School, she was Salutatorian of her class. Shortly thereafter, she joined her parents in Angleton and went to work for Mr. Frank Stevens, Sr at the Brazoria County Abstract Company. She continued her work in this area with Chock Bennett and Milton McCloud until the mid 1950’s.

On Labor Day weekend of 1945 she went on a blind date with the love of her life, Thurman. They were married May 5, 1946 at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church. They stayed devoted to each other for 69 years, until his passing in 2015. Richard Lee Green was born February 17, 1949. Jimmie Lou continued her work until Sammy Lynn Green was born January 20, 1954. After that she dedicated her life to being a homemaker. Their modest home on Shady Lane was the center of the family. Always tastefully furnished, immaculately kept with warm nourishing meals ready when Thurman returned home from work.

Always one to nurture her family, she was never one to starve her mind and spirit, Jimmie Lou was an active member of the Angleton Study Forum and was President 1969-1970. A lifelong Episcopalian, Jimmie Lou taught Sunday School for many years, was an active member of the Altar Guild and a dedicated member of the Order of Daughters of the King. Jimmie Lou was a woman of deep faith and spirituality. With the other women of the church, they rolled many enchiladas and tamales for the Mexican Supper held in November for many years as a fundraiser for the church. In her 83 years at Holy Comforter, she worked with many priests, 2 who went on to be Bishops, Roger Cilley and Todd Ousley.

When Thurman retired, they bought a 5th wheel camper and traveled extensively throughout the country. Their favorite spot was Lake City, Colorado, where Thurman would fish and Jimmie Lou would read.

She was proceeded in death by her beloved Thurman, parents, Thomas Wesley Smith and Mary Pauline Prewitt Smith; siblings Marion Duncan of Alvin, Thomas Wesley Smith, Jr of Brownsville, Dorothea Hines of Angleton, Eleanor Bird of San Antonio, Laurene Patterson of Angleton, Elizabeth Hughes Hunter of Angleton and William Smith of Blanco and their respective spouses. She is survived by her son Richard and his wife, Kathleen and son, Aidan; her daughter Sammy and her husband Rick. She is also survived by her sister Margaret Vail Roussel of Baton Rouge and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
