Obituary

Florine “Flo” Marie (Sbrusch) Kubala

March 9, 1943 – April 2, 2026

Florine “Flo” Kubala, 83, of Angleton, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of love, resilience, and cherished memories.

Flo was a true country girl at heart, born to humble beginnings in Cordele, Texas, to her parents, Alfonse and Agnes Sbrusch. Growing up, she worked alongside her family as cotton, corn and grain farmers. She often spoke proudly of picking cotton in her youth—hard work that shaped the strong work ethic and determination she carried throughout her life.

A graduate of Edna High School, Class of 1961, notably crowned FFA Sweetheart and Jackson County Fair Duchess. Flo’s ambition led her to Houston, where she attended Zorn Business College. With only $200—borrowed from a local grocery store owner in Edna, whom she faithfully repaid with her very first paycheck—she learned typing and shorthand and began building her future. During that time, she worked as a nanny for a doctor’s family, caring for their three children in exchange for room and board.

Her first professional role was with Houston Lighting & Power, where she worked on the executive floor. In those days, interviews required white gloves, a pillbox hat, and a proper suit—“just like Jackie Kennedy,” she would fondly recall.

Flo met the love of her life, Donald Ray Kubala in 1960. The two were married in 1964 in Edna, Texas, just after Don was drafted into the U.S. Army. They honeymooned in Galveston, Texas and went on to share 62 beautiful years of marriage, filled with devotion, laughter, and unwavering partnership.

Flo later dedicated many years of service to Angleton ISD, where she worked as the superintendent’s secretary until her retirement. She took pride in her work and was known for her reliability, grace, and quiet strength.

Above all else, Flo was a woman deeply devoted to her family. She loved her husband immensely and was incredibly proud of her sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who called her “Nanny”. She is survived by her husband, Donald Ray Kubala; her sons, Douglas Ray Kubala and David Ray Kubala (Michelle); her grandchildren, Kaleigh Rae Kubala (and her children, Kinsley Rae and Kannon Nelson) and Kourtney Marie Kubala.

She was preceded in death by her son, Donald Ray Kubala Jr.; her siblings, Lawrence Sbrusch, Robert “Bobby” Sbrusch, Alfonse "Junior" Sbrusch, and her beloved parents.

In her later years, Flo embraced life with joy and adventure. She became an avid cruise traveler, visiting many ports and enjoying a "little" gambling along the way—where she proudly celebrated several jackpot wins. She also had a fondness for scratch-off tickets and would always say, with a smile, that the next one would have been the winner.

A woman of strong faith, Flo was devoted to the Catholic Church, where she could be found most Sundays. She also treasured time spent camping and fishing with her husband—simple joys that became even more meaningful when shared with her children and grandchildren.

Flo will be remembered for her strength, her warmth, her unwavering love of family, and her ability to find joy in life’s simple pleasures. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured and the many lives she touched.

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
