Elmer Murray Cannon, Jr., affectionately known as Bubba, passed away on August 18, 2024, in Angleton, TX, at the age of 93. Born on December 13, 1930, in Freeport, TX, he was a lifelong resident of Texas and a revered member of the community.
A proud alumnus of Angleton High School, class of 1949, Elmer furthered his education at the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in 1954. His career was marked by a profound dedication to agriculture, serving as a third-generation farmer, rancher, and successful stockman. Elmer was instrumental in the development of his community, contributing to the incorporation of the Village of Bonney and serving as its Alderman from January 15, 1977 to May 3, 1997, and then as Mayor from 1997 to 2003. His leadership extended to the Brazoria County Farm Bureau, where he had 30 years of distinguished service including serving as board president 1973-1975 and 1980-1981.
Elmer was a devout member of the First Baptist Church of Rosharon, where he practiced his faith, served as a deacon and treasurer for many years and served his community. His personal interests included water skiing, hunting, and reading, particularly history books about the Bible, Brazoria County, his family, and the cattle industry. He was married to the love of his life, Lucille Beryl, for over 60 years before her death in 2018.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille Beryl Willett Cannon; his parents, Elmer Murray Cannon and Hazel Reaves Cannon; his brother, George Cannon; and his sister, Cleo Cannon Coleman.
Elmer is survived by his children, Mike Cannon (Kathy), Hazel Cannon Mashaw (Jimmy), Brenda Cannon, and Melody Cannon Baird (Bill); six grandchildren, Russell Cannon, Amy Cannon, Jessica Lane, Jenny Powers, Hannah Baird, and Grace Baird; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Elmer’s life was a testament to his strong family values, business acumen and commitment to his faith and community. His legacy will live on through his family and the many lives he touched. Elmer’s family takes comfort in knowing that he is now with our Lord and is now having a joyous, loving reunion with his beloved wife Lucille Beryl and other family members and friends who have awaited him in Heaven.
Visitation will be at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Funeral Service will follow at 3:00 pm with Pastor Chuck Beem officiating. There will be a private burial at a later time.
