Dolores Janda Prilop

March 26, 1926 — May 27, 2024

Dolores Janda Prilop, long-time resident of Angleton, Texas, passed away at her home on May 27, 2024, at the age of 98. She spent the days prior to her death wrapped in love by her family, young and old, near and far.

Dolores was born in La Grange on March 26, 1926, to C.M. and Bessie Janda, as the 8th of 11 children. A child of the depression, she grew up working on the family farm near La Grange and learning to make the most out of whatever they had, whether that meant wearing clothes made out of “pretty” printed feed sacks or recycling household goods as much as possible.

Dolores was married to the love of her life, George, for 65 years until his death in 2013. She liked to say they spent their whole lives together, much longer than those 65 years. George was born two days after her on a neighboring farm, and they became special friends after they started elementary school together in Hostyn. When George winked at her in second grade she knew he liked her, and this was confirmed by a pat on the cheek in fourth grade and a red carnation in sixth. In high school she told her friends they would be married someday. After George returned from World War II and finished high school, they were married on December 29, 1947, and started building their life together.

Dolores and George spent the next six decades raising their children and then providing a warm and loving place for their grandchildren to visit, who fondly remember Granny serving them corn flakes with Blue Bell vanilla ice cream for breakfast and recruiting them to smash soda cans for trips to the recycling center.

Dolores loved to garden and tend to her beautiful flowers, and the grandkids had to be careful not to trample all over them when they played baseball in the backyard. She was a wonderful seamstress, sewing many formal gowns and children’s outfits over the years. She was also a great cook and wonderful baker, and her pecan and lemon pies were always a treat.

Dolores was an active member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Angleton. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters, the Altar Society, the Red Hat Club, and KJZT. She volunteered in the church and community, including at Country Village Nursing Home and Danbury Hospital. For many years, Dolores managed the church’s resale shop, the proceeds from which were used to fund the church’s food bank and other social projects. In addition to donating their time, she and George would build, paint, and upholster furniture for the church, the school, and their family and friends.

Dolores’s smile and strength will be missed, and her family feels so lucky and honored to have had her in their lives for so long.

Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, George Prilop; daughter, LuAnn Hill; daughter-in-law, Robbye Prilop; parents; five brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by her son, Don Prilop; daughter, Alice Prilop; sister, Victoria Kolaja; grandchildren, Allyson McDonough (Loren); Valerie Prilop (Kim); Nathan Prilop (Cherri); Mathew Hill (Meghan); Aaron Hill (Olivia); and Madison Peterson (Trenton); and eight great-grandchildren. She also is loved and remembered by a large extended family.

The family will welcome visitors at Palms Funeral Home, 2300 E. Mulberry Street, Angleton, on Wednesday, June 5, from 5-6 p.m, with a Rosary service immediately following. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1713 N.
