Dennis Lee Weidner, 85, of Richwood, Texas passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 6, 2023. Dennis was born to Lee and Gertrude (Gourley) Weidner, February 5, 1938 in New Braunfels, Texas.
Dennis spent much of his childhood on the Doepenschmidt-Weidner Ranch which is one of the oldest ranches in the Honey Creek region and what is now the Honey Creek State Natural Area in Comal County, Texas. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 in 1955 and often stated that he had to join the Navy because his mother would not sign for him to join the Army or Marines. Dennis spent twelve years of active service, joined the Naval Reserves for fifteen years, and ultimately retired from the Navy with a total of twenty-seven years. He was employed with Dow Chemical and retired after twenty-nine years.
He was an avid hunter, bowled on a league for nearly twenty years, and loved to cook. When he could still drive, he would stop by his son’s house every day to let the dogs outside - but really to check the fridge for leftovers; which aptly earned him the title of Refrigerator Bandito. He had the best time on the bus trips to Coushatta and going to game rooms with Wayne and Shirley Campbell. They would determine which game room to go to based on which meal they were serving for the day.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 34 years, Anna (Hyatt) Weidner. He is survived by his children Lee Weidner (Brandy), Lawrence (Buzz) Hyatt, and Tania Gray, siblings Ruby Jane Young, Jerrol (Bill) Weidner, and Errol (Blacks) Weidner, dear friend Shirley Campbell, loyal four-legged sidekick CHUCKIE, his grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Mark Friudenberg, Cornelius Murchison, Randal Groves, Rory Neal, Richard Dillahunty, Russell Smith, and Shane Harwell.
Being very proud of his service to the country, a military service will be held graveside Thursday, December 14, 2023, Angleton Cemetery at 12pm.
Dennis has asked that in lieu of flowers, to please donate to your local SPCA.
