David Earl Bates, 79, of Angleton, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, in Angleton. He was born on March 21, 1947, in Nacogdoches, Texas, the only son of the late Jesse Watson Bates and Mary Helen (Coffman) Bates.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate David's life at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Palms Funeral Home, with Reverend Michael Gable officiating. David will be laid to rest by his father at Angleton Cemetery at a later date.

David was a man of many interests and a gentle spirit. He found great joy in reading and had a deep appreciation for the written word, becoming a beautiful writer himself. He loved spending time outdoors, taking long walks while enjoying the beauty of nature, and visiting the beach. A devoted music lover, David could often be found listening to his favorite songs or sharing a well-timed joke that brought smiles to those around him. He also had a special place in his heart for dogs and cats, whose companionship brought him much happiness.

David graduated from Angleton High School - Class of 1965, where he was active in math and science. One of his main interests was band, in which he earned district honors. A National Merit Commended Student, David also received the Dow Scholarship. Education remained important to David, and he proudly earned his Master's Degree from the University of Texas. His love of learning, thoughtful nature, and kind heart left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

David is survived by his beloved mother, Mary Helen Bates, his nieces Aimee and Robin, and his devoted caregiver, Carol Robbins, whose compassionate care, friendship, and unwavering support meant so much to him.

David will be remembered for his gentle soul, his love of knowledge and nature, his sense of humor, and the kindness he shared with everyone he met. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
