Antonia Barrera, 90, of Houston, passed peacefully from this life on the morning of June 4, 2025. Born on October 10, 1934, in Lockhart, Texas, to Juan and Bonifacia Gil, Antonia lived a life defined by strength, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family.
With heavy hearts and immense gratitude for a life of purpose and strength, we celebrate the extraordinary life of Antonia Barrera — a woman of remarkable resilience. A spiritual healer, a fierce protector, and the unwavering matriarch of a large and devoted family, Antonia’s life was marked by compassion, grit, and a powerful presence that left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Grounded by her Catholic faith, she lived with quiet strength and deep conviction. Her values — kindness, humility, and perseverance — were woven into every aspect of her life and shone through in the way she loved and cared for others.
Antonia shared a meaningful part of her life with the late Ysidro Lugo, with whom she raised eight children: Maria Antonia Lugo, The late Ernest Lugo (wife Olga), The late Chico Lugo ll (the late Delores), Victoria Peña (husband Roy), Ofelia Garcia (husband Enrique), Janie Lopez (husband Juan), Cruz Lugo (wife Karen), Leticia Requena (husband Adan).
She was the proud grandmother of 36 grandchildren, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren — each one touched by her love, guidance, and enduring strength.
We warmly invite you to join us in prayer and remembrance during the Rosary Service, lovingly led by Deacon Benny Munguia, a dear cousin to Antonia’s children. Visitation will be at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton, on Friday, June 13, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm with Rosary beginning at 6:00 pm. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, June 14, 2025 beginning at 10:00 am at Palms Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be celebrated by Deacon Benny Munguia, who will guide us in honoring Antonia’s life with faith and compassion. Burial will follow at Angleton Cemetery. A lunch provided by NASA, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren celebrating the life of our beloved Wela will follow. Serving as Pallbearers will be Cruz Lugo, Eric SanMiguel (serving in place of Felix SanMiguel), Nick Peña, Ysidro Lugo, III ("Junior"), Christopher Patiño, and Adan Requena.
Known for her honesty, toughness, and fierce devotion, Antonia held generations together with grace and quiet strength. Her home was a place of warmth, tradition, and unwavering love. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and lives of all who knew her.
