Born October 1, 1921 in Oakland, Maryland, Lelia Elizabeth Carr passed away after complications from a brief illness on November 30 , 2023.
The daughter of Rolland Schoch (d. 1969) and Margaret Schoch (d. 1983). Lelia was the first of three children.
Lelia attended classes at then Texas A&I College in Kingsville and later worked for the King Ranch. While in Kingsville Lelia married S. Herbert Sproles (d. 1951) and moved to Angleton in 1946 where she worked at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station before beginning classes in nursing at the University of Houston at Hermann Hospital, later becoming licensed by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, a license she maintained until her death. In 1954 she married Teddy Carr (d. 1977) of Angleton. She then worked at the Angleton Clinic and on the family ranch. She traveled extensively with him after he suffered a stroke and retired from ranching.
Lelia was active in the Brazosport Hospital Diabetes Support Group, an original member of the Mineral Moochers of Brazoria County and a member of the International Porcelain Artists and Teachers. An avid genealogist, Lelia researched her family history regularly and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was an associate member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
She was predeceased by her sister Margaret Ashby (d. 1984). Her son Teddy Carr Jr. (d. 2023), her granddaughter Aubrey Carr (d. 2000) as well as her husbands.
Survivors include brother Rolland Schoch of Deer Park, MD; daughter Clara Jo Hurst of Angleton; granddaughter Emily Hurst of Richmond, VA and grandson Justin Carr, US Navy.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Fuchs, Byron Novosad, Mike Owen, Max Rawlins, Robert Thomas and Chris Walthall.
Services will be held December 7, 2023 at Palms Funeral home at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment at Angleton Perpetual Care Cemetery. In lieu of usual remembrances the family suggests donations to the Brazoria County Public Library.
