James Murphy "Murphy" Rankin

February 18, 1949 — December 30, 2020

James Murphy Rankin, 71, passed away surrounded by family on December 30, 2020. He was a long time Angleton resident, born to David Samuel Rankin, Jr. and Gladys Theo Watkins Rankin. As a child, the family moved around Texas until they settled in Rosharon when Murphy's dad took a job at Darrington Prison Farm. Entering Angleton ISD in his early high school years, he met many friends and established lifelong friendships, which he held until his passing. Murphy had a passion for public service and people. He worked endlessly to support and serve the Angleton community. He proudly served the United States Marine Corp and always had a passionate heart for veterans. A recent project was gathering food and supplies for the Warriors Refuge project for homeless veterans. He was an active member of the Angleton Alumni Association Board, working endlessly on many activities. As a Scholarship Chairman for the Alumni, he worked tirelessly to raise more money in order to provide more scholarships. He was voted "Friendliest" by the AHS Class of 1967. He worked tirelessly on reunions, monthly dinners and keeping his classmates connected. A fellow classmate called him the "Heart and Soul of the Class of 1967". He never saw a need that he did not try to fix or a problem he did not try to solve. He provided for children without a Christmas, assisted a small community after a hurricane, gathered medical equipment for senior citizens, and always offered a helping hand or a listening ear. Murphy is survived by his children, David and Valarie Rankin, Aaron Rankin, Ami Rankin, Matt and Chelsea Rankin, and Abby Rankin. His grandchildren are Lauren and Clay Hicks, and Corrie Rankin. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Dora Jane Rankin Cunningham. Memorial service will be held at Palms Funeral Home on Friday, January 8, 2021, at 2:00 pm.
