Charles A. Frey (Charlie), 80, of Angleton, Texas, passed away on June 10, 2016. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Angleton. Officiating will be Rev. David Zapalac. Burial will follow at Angleton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton. Born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, on June 14, 1935, he was the son of Agnes and Charles Frey. He moved to Angleton in 1958 after graduating from the University of Missouri, Rolla. From 1958 to 1982, he helped shape the local Brazoria County landscape as a Texas Highway Department civil engineer, including the design and construction of Highway 332 and Highway 288, the interchange of Highway 288 and Highway 332, and the Highway 35 loop around Alvin. In 1982 he transferred to become the Resident Engineer of the Ellington Field office in Houston. He retired in March 1993 after which he enjoyed traveling with friends and family as well as focusing on his civic interests. Charlie was nominated for Citizen of the Year in Brazoria County in 2006 by then-Angleton mayor Matt Sebesta. He was involved in Angleton Rotary, Knights of Columbus, and served as a PTA president. He was involved with youth baseball leagues as both a coach and umpire. He organized and counseled with several organizations serving divorcees and single parents, such as Beginning Anew, Parents Without Partners, and the Response and Support for Valuable People (RSVP). One of his most cherished activities in the community was playing the role of Santa Claus for the annual Angleton Christmas on the Square celebration. He and his good friend Angie Smith would gather donations and distribute gifts to children in partnership with the Angleton Fire Department. He loved to talk about the joy on children's faces when the fire truck pulled up with Santa and Mrs. Claus on board. Charlie is survived by his children, Paul Frey and wife Kelley, and Chris Frey and wife Christy; grandchildren Darby Frey, Emily and Mason Frey, and Natalie Briers and her husband Mark, and great-grandchildren Nicolas and Aydin; and, siblings Jan White, Richard Frey, and Robert Frey. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Fran Phillips, David Frey, Paul Frey, Fred Frey, and Tom Frey.
