Sarah Bergen

Sarah Alice Mathews Bergen, a lifelong Angleton resident, passed away at her home on Monday, November 24, 2008, twenty days from the celebration of her ninty-sixth birthday. She taught all grades in the Angleton schools over a forty-four year career. Sarah was honored through the years with the love and affection of many generations of her students. One of her students remembers, “Mrs. Bergen somehow managed to make each one of us believe we were her favorite pupil”.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus Bergen, daughter, Dr. Lynne Perryman, and her four brothers Ike, Haley, Tom and Walter Mathews. She is survived by nephews Russell Mathews, Hal Schade, Bobby Mathews and wife Beverly, and nieces Peni Mathews Basse and husband Tres and Elaine Mathews Caldwell and her husband Patton. Sarah was also surrounded in her later years by dear friends Darrell and Diane Taylor and Dr. Mark and Wendy Bonnen. The family acknowledges with appreciation the loving assistance Sarah received from her caregivers Lisa Wolber, Janie Garza and Julia Duval.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 28th at the Angleton Cemetery with a memorial service to follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church to celebrate her long and faithful life. Services will be conducted by The Reverend Carol Petty. In lieu of flower, tributes may be sent to the “A” Team Scholarship Fund, 1900 N. Downing Rd., Angleton, TX 77515.
