Ruth Munson
6/18/1918 ~ 11/24/2008
Ruth Anna Munson, a life-long resident of Brazoria County, passed away in Angleton on Monday November 24, 2008 at the age of 90 surrounded by loved ones.
Born Ruth Anna Horn on June 18, 1918 at Lochridge in northern Brazoria County, Mamma descended from many of the earliest immigrants to Virginia, Massachusetts and Maine. Among her ancestors were veterans of early Indian wars, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, both sides in the War Between the States, and the Spanish-American War.
During her senior year at Angleton High School she met the love of her life Joseph Underwood Munson, Sr. an "Old 300" descendant and fifth generation Brazoria Countian. After their marriage on September 16, 1935 Joe and Ruth Anna lived in Sandy Point and Bailey's Prairie before moving to Angleton in 1944. Mamma was widowed in 1997, and in 2003, she moved with George and Margie to Bailey's Prairie. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Angleton, an associate member of Cradle of Texas Chapter, DRT, and a Charter Member of the Angleton Danbury Auxiliary.
Mamma was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Ruth Fairfield Horn; brothers, Bill and Charles Horn; sister, Pearl Sellers; nephew, William Cordrey Horn Jr.; and her husband, Joseph Underwood Munson Sr. .
Survivors include her children Joseph Underwood Munson Jr. (Olivia) of Houston; Laura Munson Cooper (Eddy) of Arlington, Texas, and George Kennedy Munson (Margie) of Bailey's Prairie. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Kathryn Adkins (Leigh), Joanna Rissmiller (David), Elizabeth Whitehead (James), David Munson and fiancée Susan Chamberlin, all of Houston, Kelly Keeble (Kenny) of Hallettsville, Amy Skinner (Tim) of Burleson, Eddy Cooper Jr. (Karen) of Arlington and Robert Munson (Angela) of Bellaire. Mamma was also blessed with fifteen great-grandchildren, Will and Mary Kate Adkins, Olivia and Ford Rissmiller, Claire and Graham Whitehead of Houston; Sara, Kaydee and Austin Keeble of Hallettsville; Jared, Josh and Justin Hudson of Fort Worth; Aidan, Dylan and Brit Cooper of Arlington. One great-great grandson, Christian Hudson of Fort Worth also survives. Other survivors include Lillian Bell of Alpine, Virginia McGee of Houston, Jessica Munson of Angleton, and Brenda Stone of College Station. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends.
Love of family was Mamma's most notable characteristic. Infinitely kind and caring with everyone, she was always ready with a hug, a kind word or even a meal, whatever best suited the occasion. Somehow she always seemed to know what everyone needed. Mamma's unfailingly optimistic outlook provided her with the ability to always see the good in people and in life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Services will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church in East Columbia on Monday December 1, 2008 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Jim Gentner officiating. Burial will follow in the Underwood family plot, Old Columbia Cemetery, West Columbia, Texas. Visitation will be from 4-6 Sunday, November 30, 2008 at Palms Funeral Home.
