Mary Alice Jett
April 22, 1918 ~ November 2, 2008
Mary Alice (Hicks) Jett passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at the age of 90. She was born in Franklin, Texas on April 22, 1918 to Alice Roberta (Reagan) and Richard L. Hicks and was the youngest of eight children who preceded her in death. Mary Alice married Blake Jett in Hearn, Texas on September 25, 1938. They moved to Jones Creek in 1943 when Blake went to work for Dow. They also lived in Lake Jackson from 1945 to 1952 when they relocated to Angleton.
Blake and Mary Alice celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends on September 25, 1987 and were married for 52 years.
Preceding Mary Alice in death are her husband, Blake, (1991), their eldest daughter, Reba Jett Kelly (1984), and son-in-law, Doyle Kelly (2001).
She is survived by her daughter, Beckie, of Angleton, granddaughter Colleen Kelly Holt and husband Michael of Montrose, Colorado; grandson, Doyle Kelly, Jr. (Pete) of Tallahassee, Florida. Also left to grieve are her two great-grandsons, Alex and Jaime Holt, sisters-in-law Marie Jett of Kosse, Texas and Artie Hicks of Van Vleck, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Missing her also will be Sassy, her Himalayan cat, who was her constant companion.
She was known to most in Angleton as “Jett” when she worked at Brockman’s and later the First National Bank. At the age of 74, she started a new career at the Wal-Mart Super Center in Angleton where she was known as “Miss Mary”. She retired from the Human Resources Department in 2002 at the age of 84. She was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Although crippled at the age of 21 in a freak automobile accident, she never let it bother her although at times it was difficult for her to walk. Words cannot describe or convey the uniqueness of my mother – they merely provide a glimpse of her. “If we can summon up an image of the mother we have lost and keep that image undimmed before the mind’s eye, then we shall not have lost her altogether.”
She was a lifetime member of the Angleton Church of Christ on Wilkins Street where she became a member in 1952. She and Blake loved their church family.
Visitation will be at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at the Franklin Cemetery in Franklin, Texas on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Pallbearers will be Roy Hicks, Alan Rouse, Travis Hicks, Carty Hicks, Laurence Thurman, and Kent Hicks.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Cypress Woods Care Center and the nurses of A-Med Community Hospice for their loving care of Mom during the last few weeks of her life.
Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things we can possibly go through. The death of a parent is not only a loss, but also a reminder we are all following an inevitable path. I’m not worried about Mom because I know her world is so much better. I am worried about me because my world just got a lot worse
